Jake Bugg has said he’s putting pressure on himself to make his next album the best yet.
Despite only being 22 – or as he points out “nearly 23” – he’s already working on album number four, the follow-up to last year’s On My One.
“It’s a pretty important time for me as an artist,” he tells Newsbeat.
“I’ve been around for a few years. I’ve got to really focus and knuckle down – it’s time to stop the fun and work a bit harder.”
Part of “knuckling down” is having a shorter list of live dates.
“I’d like to be on album 10 by now to be honest with you,” he says.
“But touring doesn’t allow for that so much. I wanted to not tour as extensively and just work in the studio a bit more.”
Among his confirmed shows for the year is Boardmasters in August – where he’ll be playing on the main stage with the likes of Two Door Cinema Club, Alt J and Slaves.
“Sometimes we’ll go and play in Europe where we’re not that high up [on the line-up] so it’s nice to be high up of course,” he says.
“It’s also fun to change things up and play smaller stages, but to play the bigger ones is quite cool. I’m really looking forward to the summer festivals so it’ll be nice to have some new music out there by then.”
His previous three albums have all been in the UK top five, but Jake’s not too focused on chart positions – instead he’s looking to “create something new and different“.
“I had a lot of fun making the last one but this one I’m going to have to work a little bit harder – the last album was a bit of an experiment to mess around with music,” he says.
“I think maybe on the last record, I don’t think the fans enjoyed it as much as the previous two in all honesty. The song people know most of mine is probably Lightning Bolt. But just because people like it, I’m not going to go away and try and formulate something that sounds the same.
“That would be boring for me and the listeners.”
Jake recently went to Nashville where he said some of the new record could be made.
“I’m obviously a big fan of country music so it was amazing to be around all these great musicians,” he says. Some of the guys I was playing with played with Elvis and stuff. I’ve been working with a producer in Nashville so I’m looking forward to playing with some musicians again really. I spent so much time on my own for the last record, it’ll be nice to play with some people again.”

Welcome to one of my highlights of 2016 – the day I had the pleasure of finally interviewing singer and songwriter Jake Bugg at TURF for AMBY. With the recent release of his new album On My One, Bugg stopped through Toronto to perform at this brilliant festival. Indulge in our conversation below as we discuss trying to rap, being terrified of zombies, ping pong, and his hometown Nottingham.
